Obituary

A celebration memorial service for Bruce William Marshall, 60, will be at 11:00am Thursday April 23, 2009 in Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Mills and Rev. Keith Harrill officiating. Burial will follow in Florence National Cemetery with full military honors by US Navy Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday at Cain Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Calvary Baptist Church, 915 Cherokee Road, Florence, SC 29501, designated to the audio/visual fund, or to the Bill Nolen (RA Camp) Scholarship Fund or to Cooks for Christ. Mr. Marshall was called home to be with his Lord Jesus on Saturday April 18, 2009 after a sudden illness. HMSC Marshall, USNR, retired was born July 26, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA, son of Sara Catherine Hood Marshall of Claymont, Delaware and the late John Lee Marshall. He graduated from Claymont High School, Clemson University in Biology, and the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD, where he received Medical Technologist degree, graduating first in his class. He also received Associates degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Information Technology from Florence-Darlington Tech. He was employed for over 20 years with McLeod Regional Medical Center as a Laboratory Computer Information Coordinator, and previously at Wilson Hospital, Darlington, SC as Laboratory Manager. He was a member of the American Society of Medical technology, a former Trustee for Health Facilities Credit Union and previously listed in Who's Who in Young Men of the South. He served in the US Navy for 29 years and was stationed in JROTC Wilmington, DE; NROTC Clemson University; active duty at the Naval Station, Philadelphia, Pa; Hospital Corp School, Great Lakes, IL; National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda. MD; Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, FL; Naval Regional Medical Center, Guam; returning to reserves MARDIVMEDBAT 207, Columbia, SC; PREVMED, Det A, Columbia, SC; Naval Hospital, 307, Beaufort, SC; Naval Hospital, Charleston, SC. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist, Florence, currently serving as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of audio/visual committee, member of The Brotherhood and the Prison Ministry Team. He also taught RAs for many years, served on numerous mission trip teams as well as volunteering for Cooks for Christ. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of nearly 38 years, Lea Esselmeyer Marshall, of the home, daughters, Tracey M. Kirby and husband, Scott of Raleigh, NC; Rebecca M. Philbeck, husband Tracy, Gastonia, NC; four grandchildren, Marshall and Caroline Kirby; Eliana and Levi Philbeck; brother, John Marshall, Stuttgart, Germany; sister, Ann M. Warchol, husband Doug, West Chester, PA; sisters-in-law, Jane Green, Myrtle Beach and Fran Esselmeyer, Gastonia, nephews, Brian and Mark Warchol and Thomas Green. Bruce loved his Lord Jesus Christ, his family and church family. He always tried to show God's love to others in tangible ways wherever he was. His great desire was that everyone in the world would come to a saving faith in Christ. Romans 8:28
