Mr. Billy Gilbert "B.G." Matthews, 86 of Florence, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the McLeod Hospice House. Born in Coward, SC, Mr. Matthews was the son of the late Alice Cockfield and Capers A. Matthews. Mr. Matthews graduated from JC Lynch High School in 1947, having served as Vice President of the senior class. He played basketball and was voted "best looking" and "sweetest boy". He attended the University of South Carolina and served as staff sergeant in the United States Army. He was a Master Mason in Hampton Lodge. He was an engineer with CSX Railroad for fifty years and retired in 1997. He attended Central United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sarah Blanton Sunday School Class. A member of Oakdale Country Club, Mr. Matthews was an avid golfer, who loved friends and family. Mr. Matthews was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia Scott Matthews and his second wife, Virginia Poston Matthews, brothers, Owen, Randolph (Christine), Ted, Tom, Ashton (Foye) and sisters, Alda (Clausen) Coward, Cleola (Howard) Moody, and Monetta Matthews, and "a special friend", Miriam Broach. He is survived by his sons, Steve (Debbie) Matthews and Mike Matthews, grandsons, Scott (fiancée Amber), Lawton (Chelsea) Spencer (Ashton), a granddaughter, Lacey Matthews, and great-granddaughter, Madison Matthews. The family will receive friends from 2-3 PM Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home with the Funeral services following at 3PM in the Chapel of Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice House or to Central UMC.
