Murrell's Inlet, SC Betty Owens Cornett, 81, of Murrell's Inlet, formerly of Florence, SC, died peacefully with her children by her side on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. Mrs. Cornett was born in Florence County, a daughter of Earnest and Lincy Lane Courtney. She retired from General Electric and was a member of Truth Pentecostal Holiness Church in Florence, SC. She was very passionate about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, her family and working in her yard. She is preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by three husbands; Earnest "Earnie" Cornett, Freddie Ray and Wilfred Owens; a grandson, Ryan Steverson; five sisters, Inez Courtney, Violet C. McNeil, Merlee C. Powell, Octavia C. Pigate and Katie Mae Caudell; two brothers, Cecil L. Courtney and Ralph H. Courtney. Surviving are three loving children; two daughters, Carol S. (Bob McIlroy) Powers of Murrell's Inlet, Darice (Max) Burkett of Florence; and a son, Kevin F. (Brenda) Ray of Pigeon Forge, TN; a granddaughter, Courtney Elizabeth Fike; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter D. Boss and Haley Elizabeth Fike; her faithful canine companion, Holly Berry; and many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly as if they were her own children. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM on Friday, October 17, 2014, in the chapel of Cain Funeral Home in Florence. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 5:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Humane Society, American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Foundation. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Grand Strand Nursing Home, Waccamaw County Hospital and Laurel Gardens for all of their loving care given to Mrs. Cornett through the years.
