IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Annie Kate James
Prosser
December 28, 1948 – February 13, 2026
Annie Kate James Prosser, 77, left this world for Heaven on Friday, February 13, 2026.
Born in Darlington, SC to the late H. E. James, Sr. and Ella Mae Shoemake James, she was the third of eight siblings. At a very young age, Kate was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus, a condition that over her lifetime would require painful treatments and medications. As a teenager, she spent her time with her close friends and helping her mama take care of her many brothers and sisters. One of her greatest joys was spending Saturdays preparing and cooking a large Sunday dinner for the whole family. Her favorite place in the world was Surfside Beach, bathing in the sun.
In her late twenties, she began to lose the ability to walk or speak. Already having given birth to her precious children, she relied on her parents to help to raise Tammy and Jamie, but she was ever present, being a loving and safe space for them. She taught them compassion for those less fortunate and love for everyone, no matter their circumstances. After losing Jamie, and the passing of both parents, Kate went to live with her daughter Tammy and her family. This gave her the opportunity to spoil her granddaughters daily and boy did she! Nothing brought her joy like ordering them all the things a little girl could dream of. Her laughter at the dinner table was ever present. Her smile was easy and often. Then arrival of her great grandchildren was spectacular for her. More babies to spoil. It seems she spent her whole life loving on and spoiling babies. She did that until her last good day.
Kate was predeceased by her parents, her son and four of her siblings: Sheila Yarborough, Dale James, Terry James and Larry James.
She is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Tony) Garris; granddaughters Abbey (Charkeen) McFadden and Anna Garris; and great grandchildren, Micah and Eden McFadden. She was looking forward to adding Hunter Heape, fiancé to Anna, to her list of people to spoil.
She is also survived by her sister, Jean Harris and three brothers, Ed James Jr, Ray James and Tony James. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at Palmetto Street Church of God with a memorial service to be held at 2:00 pm at the church. Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
