Obituary

Annette Peden Hamer passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, from pneumonia. She was born December 14, 1920, in Fountain Inn, SC, the daughter of the late Henry Burwell and Willie McDowell Peden. She was a graduate of Simpsonville High School and Lander College, Class of 1942. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 40 years, James Ray Hamer; her daughter, Peden Hamer Willingham (John); her sons, James Ray Hamer, Jr. (Lynn) and Lewis Burwell Hamer, her sister Louise Peden Smith (Lloyd), brother Henry Burwell Peden, Jr., her nephew Richard Hughey Smith (Base) and her niece Barbara Wilkins Brewer (Austin). Following her marriage to James Ray Hamer, she moved to Clio, SC, where she taught school in Bennettsville for a number of years and retired from the Department of Social Services. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Hamer moved to Florence, SC. Mrs. Hamer was a member of the Samuel Bacote Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of Highland Park UMC and the Wesley Bible Class. Mrs. Hamer is survived by her daughter, Mary Hamer Kirkpatrick (Dr. Palmer), her son-in-law John Randall Willingham (Stephanie), granddaughter, Claire Kirkpatrick Cobb (Dr. Daniel), grandsons David Wesley Willingham (Heather), Dr. McNeill Palmer Kirkpatrick (Tessa) and James Ray Hamer, III, and four great-grandchildren, David Wesley Willingham, Jr., Wyatt Ray Willingham, Nora Lee Kirkpatrick and Foster Robert Kirkpatrick. She is also survived by her nephew, Thomas Burwell Smith (Susan) and her niece Linda Wilkins Plunkett (Dr. Walter). A memorial service celebrating the life of Annette Peden Hamer will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 1300 Second Loop Road, Florence, SC, on Friday, May 6, 2016, at 3:00 pm, directed by Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 until 3 PM prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Hamer donated her body to the Medical University of SC.
